They Just Celebrated 20 Years At The Greeks Drive In on Cherry Street in Milford and Have Been Cruising For 25 Years Click on any image to see larger picture Now for the hard part. The man himself. I had the opportunity to sit in my truck at the Flyer Friday night and talk at length about cars, cruising, and the good old days with a soft spoken, unassuming man named Phil Convertito. Phil is kind of camera shy, and modest but he was kind enough to indulge me as I chased him around with my camera . Phil doesn’t care about how much your car is worth, or how much money you have invested it. As a matter of fact He doesn’t care if your car is a full blown Boyd custom, or a rotted piece of rolling road kill. To Phil cruising is what it’s all about. Not politics or money. Phil is the president of the Cruising East Car Club. The club holds what is inarguably the longest running club sponsored cruise night in the state of Ct. They hold the record at 25 consecutive cruise seasons. The last 20 seasons have been spent at a little Drive In joint in Milford called The Greeks. The club took it’s name from a store front that sold fuzzy dice and other automotive/cruising goodies. Cruisin' East spent it’s first season at Rudie’s in Westport, then after Rudie’s was sold moved to Valley Farms in Bpt. The club picked Thursday nights because downtown Bpt. was still open late back then. They moved to the Greeks in ’85 and have been there ever since. Phil’s son drives a ’50 Mercury they built together, and Phil hopes this will insure Cruisin' East will be cruising well into the future. Phil once donated 150 or so trophies he had won with his ’56 Caddy ragtop to the Boy Scouts for their Pine Wood Derby races. How many people would do that ? Phil, it was a pleasure to meet and talk with you, and I look forward to many more conversations with you in the future.
